A Beautiful Nightmare

We need to remember this collection...

Riccardo Tisci Wows with Givenchy’s Fall Couture Collection

As the resident dark horse of the fashion world, Riccardo Tisci lured viewers into an altered state of consciousness for Givenchy’s fall 2010 couture collection. His continuous ability to romanticize death shown through in each of the the luxe confections, sequentially working to guide audiences deeper and deeper into a tangible fragment of Tisci’s own world.
Opting to show the collection in presentation form rather than on a runway evoked an intimate, elegant setting from one of couture’s modern masters of the mid-twentieth century. By allowing guests to interact with the gowns and mingle with the silhouettes, they were given a better view of every deserving detail in order to maximize the overall effect of Tisci’s meticulous handiwork. In a typical runway setting, sublime details such as the zippers made of bones, tulle underlay, and pearl encrusted bodices would have been lost to the eye of the viewer.
The first piece, as shown on Natasha Poly, was a stunning technical achievement from one of the French Federation of Fashion and of Ready-to-Wear of Couturiers and Fashion Designer’s youngest members. Seamlessly transitioning from the flat, skeletal pattern of the bodice into the gushing feathered skirt reminded Givenchy devotees why his collections are continuously one of the most anticipated each season. She wore a dress so incomprehensibly intricate and mentally devastating that it was easy to imagine Tim Burton casting it on a new take of Walt Disney’s Snow White. The sheer paneling and elaborate embroidery worked together to form a suggestively contemporary gown that could just as easily be sent to the Oscars, or to the set of a Twilight film.
As the designer attests, this collection is somewhat of an ode to the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, the surrealist painter who was best known for her self-portraits and dark obsession with morality. Tisci interpreted her lifelong obsession with death through his melange of signatures: lace, fringe and degrade, which were scrupulously applied to resemble the decaying human form.
A man known for his gothic aesthetic, Tisci proved that he could work even the nearly all-white palette into his grotesque vision for the collection. The gowns that made up the ten-piece collection were the sort of thing one imagines only the truly ingenious could conjure up. The story of his mental and physical pain was lined up before our eyes as he executed his vision through well cut fabric and hand curled feathers. The mind-numbing intensity highlighted Tisci’s penchant for ornate extravagance.
In the end, this collection perfectly captured Tisci’s capacity to demonstrate his mastery of modern design, coupled with his ability to make the Cimmerian shade of death look appealing.

Gleek Out!

Glee comes back tonight! And even better, it's now set in New York City. So, basically two of my favorite things in the world are now coming together. It also means that I can kiss my Thursday night's goodbye because watching Glee is quite the process with me. There is, of course, the pre-screeing activities such as discussing who we think is going to break up tonight, pressing the coffee (I've gotten up to four cups a day- but I can still fall asleep within an hour of having one.), and getting into our PJs. And afterwards, there is the all important hour-long discussion and scrutinizing of absolutely every move made and songs sung, then of course, some ice cream (or in the case of a winter season, hot apple cider). It's quite a production.

In terms of where the show is going, I honestly feel that it could go in a lot of different directions. I'm really excited that Rachel is moving to the city to attend NYADA though. Though I like to think I'm not quite as obnoxious as Ms.Berry, I definitely identify with her level of determination and passion. I have absolutely no talent in the musical department, but we both moved (back) to New York City to follow our dreams right out of high school and are willing to stop at nothing to make sure we're successful. Take it from me and Rachel, hard work pays off and never give up. The cream always rises bitches.

On a completely different note, does anyone remember Glee's FNO PSA promoting last years events? Or the accompanying Vogue spread? It was so terrible. I like that none of them know anything about fashion though. Even Chris Colfer (Kurt on Glee) said, "When Glee first started, I had no idea who Marc Jacobs was. In no way was I a fashion person." And Lea Michele? My original intention for this post was going to be a photo of her in a ball gown followed by the quote, "If you try on a gown with no make-up & your hair in a ponytail and still feel beautiful, then you know it's a good dress." But after searching for a good fifteen minutes without a single red-carpet look of hers that I liked, I couldn't look anymore. Estee Stanley has her work cut out for her.

Men's Swimwear- New Shapes, New Styles

Men’s swimwear is definitely becoming more and more fashion-forward. People are gradually turning away from baggy board shorts and looking to brands that display a little refinement in their cut and shape. But why is this happening now?
One argument is that we’re influenced by stars and celebrities more than ever before. Who can forget Daniel Craig’s trunks in Casino Royale? Moments like these are crucial to sparking new trends and inspiring the public to try something different.
Another interesting point is that with straitened financial circumstances for many of us, the childish look of board shorts is becoming inappropriate – instead, men wish to convey professionalism and responsibility even in their leisure wear. On a beach wedding weekend, or a company activity vacation, making the right impression is still tremendously important, and the desire to be taken seriously is reflected in a more sober choice of attire.
Writing about the financial success that these trends have brought to the industry, Ray Smith of the Wall Street Journal says: “Sales of men’s swimwear rose 14% in the 12 months ending in February, to $522.6 million from 459.9 million”. These statistics come during the rise of the leaner, slimmer look – surely evidence that the new cuts have struck a chord with consumers.

Online sites have reflected this in their summer swimwear ranges – swimwear for men at Very, for instance, is embracing new styles with pieces like these Gant Magnolia Swim Boxers. With a shorter length and subtle flower pattern, it promotes the length of the leg while flattering the man who wants to move away from a baggier style.
And for those who can’t quite stretch to a designer budget, there are these star-patterned swim shorts from Oiler and Boiler – and the best part is that they come with a free pair of flip flops to complete your beach wardrobe! With a huge range of new swimwear styles on the market, there’s something to suit every man, so you can enjoy your summer break without worrying about what to wear by the poolside!Men’s swimwear is definitely becoming more and more fashion-forward. Shark Tooth Boots, a Love Letter

GIVENCHY Black Leather Shark Tooth Boots

"Do I have to wear 4" heels? No, but that's the silhouette I prefer. It's a fashion thing." - Kerry Diamond (Lancome's PR president)

I have developed somewhat of a serious obsession with these Givenchy knee-high, black (though there is certainly something to be said of the daring fire-engine red version) leather, shark tooth boots. I always love the look of a concealed ankle, and though they're not traditionally attractive, their severe leather overlay and hidden 4" heel prove to make anyone's legs appear a million miles long. In the traditional, slightly subversive-style of Ricardo Tisci, these boots take Fall's Equestrian style to the Lower East Side.
